What You Should Know About the International Roadcheck
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is conducting its 30th Annual International Roadcheck for 72 hours between June 5th and June 8th across North America. With the help of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, an average of 15 buses or trucks will be inspected per minute.
For 2018, inspectors will conduct the North American Standard Level 1 Inspection which includes examinations of:
- driver’s license and ME certificates
- hours-of-service documentation
- motor carrier registration and shipping documentation
- seat belt usage
- influence of alcohol and / or drugs
- brake systems
- cargo securement
- coupling devices
- driveline / driveshaft
- exhaust systems
- frames
- fuel systems
- lighting devices (required lamps)
- suspensions & tires
- van and open-top trailer bodies
- wheels, rims, and hubs
- windshield wipers
- emergency exits
(on buses) - HAZMAT requirements
LAST YEAR, 23% OF VEHICLES AND 4.2% OF DRIVERS INSPECTED WERE PLACED OUT OF SERVICE DUE TO CRITICAL VIOLATIONS.
2018’s Special Emphasis: Hours-of-Service
For 2018, inspectors will pay special attention to Hours-of-Service (HOS) and ELD compliance. While they always ensure safe operating regulations are being followed, they are placing special focus on it this year to remind of its importance to road safety. They will check for proper knowledge and usage of AOBRDs and ELDs, criteria for being placed Out of Service (OOS), allowance of Paper Logs, and requirements by load or cargo types.
Top ELD and HOS Violations
- Operating with a device that is not registered with FMCSA
- Failing to provide supporting documents in the driver’s possession upon request
- ELD – No record of duty status (ELD Required)
- No record of duty status when one is required (ELD Not Required)
- Not using the appropriate method to record Hours-of-Service
- Failing to note malfunction that requires use of paper log
